Jack Cassinetto Biography

Jack’s unique style is a blend of old and new, his work is inspired by the changing light of day and guided by a love of mood and subdued color. His style of painting is almost ethereal in feeling.  In Jack’s intense landscapes the California light plays across the painting creating a drama that evokes a feeling of another time.

Cassinetto’s paintings are after the tonalist plein aire style, PLEIN AIR is French for "outdoors." In the late 1890s through the 1930s, there was a school of California painters called Tonalist’s that routinely painted outdoors, capturing the essence of California landscapes with all the beauty and splendor. The style of plein aire painting is related to the French Impressionists of the late 19th century.

Jack’s use of light with dark shadows accomplishes both depth and dimension to create a painting that invites you to step inside. The settings for his paintings include scenes from the Northern California Coast, the Wine Country, the Central Valley waterways, the California Gold Country, the American and Sacramento Rivers, Yosemite and Lake Tahoe.

"In my art, you'll find that I bring the whole piece together to create a mood. It's more than just a painting. It's the type of frame, the colors, the light and dark contrast, the negative space, the style and color of the frame, the composition, the perspective, and more. I debate over each color, each shadow. I try to create a painting that someone else will identify with it as I do. I want to create a timelessness that lasts, something of beauty that people will get to enjoy for many years to come." The importance of painting California landscapes in today's world, where we are quickly changing the rural landscape of California to that of an urban setting, becomes even more important as a way to leave a legacy for tomorrow's children.
