Alexander
Chen was born in Canton, China in 1952.
His interest
in art began to develop at a very young age when he instinctively
began life drawing by experimenting on fellow classmates. In the
years that followed, his drawings reflected his own experiences
as well as life in Ancient China. As the legendary heroes of his
culture came to life under his magical pencil, he compiled his
pictures and drawings in storybook form. By the time Alexander
finished elementary school he had completed nearly forty picture/story
books.
Alexander's
paintings, like those of the great American master, Norman Rockwell,
reflect life as he (and we) would like it to be. They are extremely
detailed and complex, take months to complete, and invariably
offer the viewer a different aspect of the work with each successive
viewing. Currently, he is working on his American Cities
series. This innovative artistic treatment portrays American cities
through the eyes of an artist who is completely fascinated by
America-- where things are made larger than life-- through advertising
and marketing hyperbole-- a world markedly different from Communist
China. America's urban streets are portrayed as a whimsical place,
a simple place, full of fun and diverse activities.
