Jerry Joslin
is a modern master of representational figurative sculpture. It
is his chosen discipline because it offers the greatest challenge
to "...express my deepest feelings, intuition, inspiration
and perception, all in terms that others can understand and appreciate...the
human figure is undeniably the touchstone to art in any era."
His sculpture
is imbued with a lyrical romance that carries the traditions of
the old European masters onward into the new millenia with a fresh
contemporary narrative. Look closely at Joslin's impressive body
of work and you see more than figurative interplay with precise
execution. Implicit in each sculpture is a personal communication
that exposes the intellect of this artist.
Through the
use of folded two-dimensional surfaces, Joslin has created provocative
background metaphors. The two dimensional surfaces then extrude
into seemingly three-dimensional forms. This trans-dimensionalism
creates mysterious tapestries, rich in compelling imagery, leaving
more to the imagination than straightforward representation.
These trans-dimensional
sculptures are different from 'reliefs' because they are not fore-shortened.
He intends them to be free standing, their reverse sides suggesting
a primitive 'rawness.' Any two-dimensional backdrop he creates
may suggest an allegory or intangibility, such as 'life-force,'
fate, spirituality, harmonic rhythm, etc...
The reverse
side or 'back' of his trans-dimensional sculpture represents the
amorphous void, the imponderable nothing-ness from which everything
emerges. The sculpture is then seen to resolve itself, metaphysically,
into a higher form of art.
Attesting
to his pre-eminence among contemporary figurative sculptors, Joslin's
impressive body of work, created over the last quarter century,
is represented in many museum, public, and private collections
around the world.
