Recognized
as a prominent wildlife photographer, Jim Stamates has been creating
photographic images for more than 25 years. Since 1980, he has
focused his talents on the photography and preservation of our
natural surroundings.
For Jim,
respect for wildlife takes precedence over "getting the shot."
His philosophy is rewarded by a unique intimacy with his subjects.
Dedicated to the proper and ethical behavior towards nature, Jim
champions his "low impact field techniques" through
lectures and workshops that emphasize the well-being of the subject.
Because of
his "low impact" philosophy, Jim was chosen by the National
Wildlife Service to document the nesting of the American White
Pelican on Pyramid Lake, NV. It was the only time that anyone
had been allowed to place a blind at the nesting site and stay
overnight on Anaho Island National Wildlife Refuge, which is closed
to the public. From this unique experience, Jim created an educational
audiovisual presentation called "Pelicans of Pyramid"
which has been enjoyed by numerous groups, including the Audubon
Society, Nature Conservancy, and visitors to the Stillwater/Fallon
National Wildlife Refuge. The presentation is currently being
shown to school children throughout northern Nevada and California
as a means of education for this sensitive species and unique
natural area.
Jim has been
highly commended by BBC Wildlife Magazine and the Natural History
Museum, (London, England) through the prestigious Wildlife Photographer
of the Year Competition 1997. Jim's images are published worldwide
and can be seen in many magazines. Tony Stone images represents
Jim's photographs for commercial use throughout the world.
Closest to
Jim's heart are the images he selects for his Limited Edition
Collection. These are the special images that move the soul and
are displayed in galleries throughout the United States including
his summer gallery at Lake Tahoe, CA. Jim has collectors as far
away as Japan, Australia, and Europe.
Jim is a
member of the American Society of Media Photographers (ASMP) ansd
the North American Nature Photography Association (NANPA). He
and his wife Kathy reside at Lake Tahoe, CA.
